In the United Kingdom, they have opened up more than 350 halls that have the traditional game played on cards and a version played on electronic tablets. One of the favorite clubs is called the MeccaClub in Nottingham. Many people like to spend birthdays and other special occasions while out gaming. The almost 500 year old game is expected to bring in £728million by the year 2019. By 2014, the game made the clubs £690million.

This popular church game loved by children up to seniors alike originated in Italy back in 1530. It was called Il Giuoco del Lotto d’Italia, a lottery game. By 1778, the French had created a version of the game using 27 squares that were laid out in three rows and nine columns. The game made it to the United States in the early 1920s when Hugh J. Ward brought the game to carnivals in the Western Pennsylvania area. The orgin of the name Bingo is uncertain, but it probably dates back to the early 1920s when a woman friend of Edwin Lowe shouted it out when she won, or the name sounds a little like the sound of a bell sounding when someone wins. In 1942, Edwin Lowe had patented the 25 space card. As common as the game is in the US, the United Kingdom first discovered this parlor game back in the 18th century, predating us by two centuries. The game is played in churches, synagogues, camps, rehabilitation centers, and more by people from school aged children to the elderly. It is used for entertainment purposes and to raise money for charity.

The rules were simple. Players would cover up a free space in the 25 space board. There was someone who picked out numbers from a ball spinner by cranking up the spinner and then putting a hand in and drawing a ball out. The person in charge of the game would call out the numbers like B-5, and the players would check their cards to see if they had it. There are version of filling up the entire board with discs, stamp the card, or place a flat scrap on a line, straight across or diagonally, X, T,I, and Round Robin, which means the numbers on the boarder count. When someone thinks they have won, the person in charge of the game will ask the player to call out his numbers, against what the person in charge of the game has before the player can be considered a winner.

There are new bingo sites popping up online so that players from all over the world can participate in this age old game. The online game was introduced back in 1996 in the United States and the United Kingdom when the internet was still in its infancy. The game was free to sign up for. It is not clear who brought this game to the internet.
